5 little things you can change today to achieve your dream of work-life balance

The modern woman. We want it all! And so we bloody well should, we deserve it all!

But “it all” can be quite hard to juggle. Wrestling the kids to get ready for school, trying to keep the house from becoming some sort of post ww2 bomb site, and then arriving at work looking presentable and having a fully functioning professional brain can be tough! I know this all too well, I live this life! Lockdown and home-schooling has really muddied the waters for us all.

Now the reality is that, in most cases, we CHOSE this life so sympathy from partners and family members can be pretty thin on the ground. We wanted a family and we are ambitious women who wanted successful careers. We’ve totally got this! We just need to separate our work and family life. Ie, the age-old dream of having ‘The perfect work-life balance’.

It CAN be done! Here’s how:

1. Set strict working hours

Particularly if you’re working from home, it can be hard to differentiate between what’s work and what’s home life so setting strict hours to clock in and clock out is essential. For example, 9 – 5pm, no more work after 5 until 9am the next day.

2. Put down the mobile phone!

“Oh look, little Johnny looks so cute – I’ll just grab my phone and take a photo. While I’m here, I’ll just quickly reply to this email and call this person back…”

We’re ALL guilty of it. You’re out with the kids at the park and you’re drawn to check your work messages. Put the phone away. This is family time, enjoy it!

3. Lose the guilt

It’s not a good look! We often feel guilty that we’re working too much and not spending enough time with the kids but if that’s how it is, just accept it and be ok with it.

If you could adjust your work-life balance to make more time for the kids then great – do it. But if your job is demanding and busy, just accept that for what it is.

We spend too much time thinking “I feel guilty for not playing lego with them. I feel guilty for not being able to pick them up from school this afternoon.” Those horrible guilty thoughts take up time and brain space. 2 things we seem to have very little of! Your time could be better spent thinking about work when you’re in work mode, and family fun when you’re in family mode.

Guilt is a wasted emotion.

4. Get organised

If you’re like me and you’re an organised person, you’ll like this tip! If not, hopefully I can help you to become more organised!

  • Plan your day – but be realistic.

Do you have time to do school drop off and still work all the hours you need?

If not, speak to your manager about changing your working hours or arrange family members to drop off the kids. Starting your day off in a stressful way will impact the rest of your day.

  • The mundane chores

Yes we have work time and family time, but where do we fit in the dreaded chores?!

This again is up to you and down to getting organised. Book into your diary 30 mins to 1 hour per day to tidy up/sort washing etc. This could be in your work time or family time as these are necessary things we all need to do. Don’t feel guilty about having to do them as your entire family benefits from them!

Make these chores a family event – prepare dinner as a family, make the kids responsible for putting their own washing away, get your husband to empty that bloody dishwasher for once!

5. Make time for yourself

My chiropractor once told me “As a mother, if you fall down, it’s like dominoes – the whole family unit will collapse with you”. You are the pillar keeping everything strong and functioning. Look after yourself and make time for YOU.
We are a generation who want it all. But no one said it would be easy! Work-life balance is one of the most important things we can try and get right but it takes some work. We’re all so bloody busy that we don’t take the time to actually get organised and plan how we could be living our best lives! Get off the hamster wheel, read this blog, and you can achieve the ultimate life goal or work-life balance!
